The still waters at Mangakino have hosted rowers from the upper North Island for the last 50 years.  In the 1970s and 80s it was the site of summer training camps for many of the clubs in the region.  In the 1990s till the present, the lake has featured many and regular club and school training camps.

While water levels, land and accommodation availability have altered the way in which the rowing community have been able to utilse Lake Maraetai, the facilities for passive aquatic crew sports at Mangakino have been developed and maintained by a few far-sighted individuals, with the support of the rowing community.

Mangakino Water Sports Camp Incorporated Society’s aspirations are:

-          To promote and encourage involvement of people in passive aquatic crew sports by providing a low cost, inclusive and accessible training and development centre.

-          To continue its existence in a non-partisan way, ensuring that the society makes the camp and other facilities available for people to participate in passive aquatic crew sports in a non-exclusive manner.
